2010 SIM Salon: As or Fs for A Journal Lists?
Sunday, August 8, 4-5pm, Queen Elizabeth, Peribonca Room
Co-chairs: Barry Mitnick and Mark Sharfman
Business schools around the world are introducing the "A Journal List" as a means of providing incentives for faculty to publish in the best places, and as a way of promoting a school's publishing prowess. There is no consensus list of so-called "A journals" in business, however, and the ways in which such lists are constructed and used in research evaluations, especially in faculty performance evaluations, have become quite controversial. The practice has become of vital interest to our area because few A journal lists include the major journals in our field. This tends to define work in our area has having below-"A" quality, which practice becomes an extremely serious issue in promoting the growth of our field and sustaining those who research within it.
This year's SIM Salon will be devoted to an examination of this critical current issue for the field. It will provide both an analysis of the "A journal list" phenomenon and an opportunity for attendees to discuss and debate its dilemmas.
The SIM Salon session, scheduled on Sunday during the Academy of Management, is designed to provide a forum for discussion of controversial issues within the SIM field.
