I am writing as an old and dear friend of one of our colleagues, Laura Pincus Hartman.  Some of you already may be aware but, for those of you who do not know, it is with such sadness that I share with you the following news.

Laura and her family suffered a profound heartbreak at the end of December when her daughter Emma (18) died in a tragic car accident.  Our academic community is small but strong. We share a great deal over the course of our professional careers and get to know each other both electronically and through our conferences.  We often share news of positive events, I just thought that those of you who know Laura might appreciate also knowing about this terribly unfortunate event, as well.  Our lives are so disparate, there was really no other way to share what is important news.

Please note, Laura has given me permission to share this here. As to how to proceed, while this need not be said explicitly, please proceed gently, and with respect for her grief, as it is profound. Emails are welcome, but because she is out of the country, phone calls are not an option right now. Additionally, Emma's obituary has some requests on behalf of the family as to how to communicate your condolences in the form of charitable donations.

Each step of the grieving process is a challenge, and I want to send out my love and support to her while she walks this journey with her family.
