Business in Society 'At the Interface' (PDW)
Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 5 2017 3:15PM - 5:15PM at Atlanta Marriott Marquis in Atrium A707

Sponsor(s): (SIM, ONE, MSR, CMS, PTC)

In accord with the 2017 Academy of Management (AOM) theme – At the Interface – this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) proposes to discuss and debate 'interstitial openings' driven by emerging connectedness of businesses in society with various stakeholders and systems. AOM scholars interested in different aspects of businesses acting in society (e.g., SIM, ONE, MSR, CMS, PTC) will tackle the question: What are the (future) distinctive competencies of business in society scholarship 'at the interface' in a world of both collapsing boundaries and increasing connectedness in enterprises and in our own world of research? The question will highlight the ways in which scholars investigating business in society issues, including responsible practice, ecological impacts, spirituality at work, and critique of the system potentially combined with each other. This PDW proposal brings together a number of scholars with interests in all of these areas to help frame these questions: Jegoo Lee (current states of business in society research), Sandra Waddock (business in society across AOM), Jim Walsh (business in society as the soul of AOM), Dawn Elm (business in society's distinctive missions), Don Siegel (focusing on the micro level), Irene Henriques (business in society research spillover), Michael Barnett (societal outcomes), Jamie Hendry (sustainability as systems thinking), Paul Adler (political-economy and business in society), Kathryn Goldman-Schuyler (action research on healthy organizations), and Laura Albareda (value creation). This workshop comprises a working conversation on moving the field forward.
