New Home for GIVING VOICE TO VALUES at University of Virginia Darden School of Business

    Greetings!

I hope you are well and thriving!

I am delighted to share some of the exciting developments with the Giving Voice To Values pedagogy/curriculum for values-driven leadership development! Please do visit www.GivingVoiceToValues.org and www.GivingVoiceToValuesTheBook.com to access the curriculum and learn more.

First and foremost, GVV HAS A NEW HOME! GVV is finding a welcoming and supportive new home at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, within the Institute for Business in Society! Please check out our new web home and the following Darden news releases, articles and blogs:

Below are a few other highlights, thanks to the intellectual and pedagogical efforts of the GVV Network:

    Curriculum, Courses and Resources

GVV Curriculum: The GVV cases, readings, exercises, etc. are now available at UVA Darden Business Publishing.

The existing materials will continue to be available for FREE download. [New materials developed after September 2016 will carry a small charge].

Faculty-Only Resources:  Faculty will be able to access the Faculty-ONLY resources (Teaching Notes, B cases, etc.) by request through Darden Business Publishing (please indicate you are Faculty). This will be a one-time registration and will result in greater security for the Faculty-Only materials.

GVV Course: An intensive GVV elective has been piloted at Babson College and adapted for use elsewhere. The course – When Leadership Really Counts: An Action Practicum – has three components:

    (1) students are introduced to and experience GVV themselves

    (2) they develop GVV cases and teaching plans in a functional area or industry of their choice, and then

    (3) they deliver the material to their peers in a workshop format.

This LEARN-CREATE-SHARE model allows students to develop peer coaching skills in enacting their values and allows their institutions the chance to develop a co-branded collection of GVV materials. The course can be offered as a regular course, a half course and/or a two-weekend intensive workshop/course.

If you or one of your colleagues would like to offer this course, please contact us for more information:

    What's New With GVV?

Exciting New GVV Projects: We are launching a new project at UVA Darden to develop a GVV MOOC, as the initial phase of a proposed new GVV certification opportunity that we plan to launch. Please contact Mary Gentile at GentileM@darden.virginia.edu if you have ideas about this.

New Corporate Applications for GVV: We have recently engaged in exciting new GVV projects with Unilever Nigeria and Magnetrol, and have shared the GVV approach with the Australian Financial Markets Association as well as a number of Australian financial institutions.

Tri-College Mellon Faculty Forum Grant Awarded to Explore GVV as a Framework in Liberal Arts Education: Denise Crossan, Lang Visiting Professor at Swarthmore College, was awarded the Tri-College Mellon Faculty Forum grant for a program at Swarthmore, Haverford and Bryn Mawr on "Exploring the 'Giving Voice to Values' curriculum as an innovative framework to examine the challenges of considering ethics and values within teaching, research and practice, and to foster further values-driven leadership development with the liberal arts education community."

    Presentations and Workshops

GVV Is On The Road! In September, we had the good opportunity to share GVV widely in Australia – Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra! Hosted by the University of Notre Dame Australia, we shared a workshop on GVV at the Palliative Care Nursing Association conference and presented the work to a variety of healthcare and business audiences. UNDA hosted a full-day symposium on the Philosophical Foundations of GVV, with papers from nine academics on various aspects of the work. And we had the opportunity to share GVV with a variety of financial institutions in the area.

Upcoming presentations include: INSEAD in France; Jonkoping International Business School in Sweden; Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam; and a convening of Compliance Executives at the Forum Compliance & Integrity in Munich; among others!

    Other News

GVV Is Growing! Use of GVV is growing all the time! Well over 920 pilots on all seven continents – in business education, in companies themselves, and increasingly in other areas of professional education – Law, Engineering, Nursing, Medicine, Military Education, Sports Education, Secondary Education, and more.

Watch This 3-Minute Video Introduction to GVV and the Online Interactive Social Cohort-Based Modules! This series of six online GVV modules that we built in partnership with Nomadic are really taking off! There were over 150 faculty registrants in our free faculty introduction to these materials this fall – and the response was heartening. These modules are being used to enhance the in-person classroom experience across a variety of disciplines including traditional ethics courses, management courses, government + society courses and leadership courses.

Videos, Articles, Interviews, Op-Eds: There are lots of other materials that can be used in your teaching at the book website, www.MaryGentile.com, under the "Media Room" and the "Other Writing" tabs. Most of them are FREE. Of particular interest is the 8-minute video introduction to GVV from McKinsey Quarterly.

Also, a new journal article by Jane Cote and Claire Kamm Latham, "Peer-to-Peer Implementation of an Action-Oriented Ethics Framework in the Introductory Accounting Sequence" (Emerald Group Publishing Limited, 2016), uses the GVV curriculum to prepare introductory accounting students to address ethical challenges they will face in the workplace.

I will stop there, but there is always more and your ideas and contributions are always welcome and HUGELY appreciated. Be in touch ANY TIME!

    Thank You and Cheers!

    Mary C. Gentile Ph.D.
