    Hello,

I am looking materials that would be relevant to a seven-week MBA course on ethical leadership.  If you can point me toward useful resources, such as syllabi, readings, exercises, and so forth, I would be grateful.

    Thanks,

    Jeff Edwards

I use the Hartwick Humanities series in my undergraduate Business & Society class (online and in person) for ethical reasoning.  I have them develop a paper regarding their ethical positions after reading A Christmas Carol.  My predecessor used Plato's The Republic.  That was stretch for me as I've little background in philosophy.  I also use the movie The Emperor's Club as a way of conveying ethical reasoning when I teach in the classroom.  I do that at the beginning so they have time to ramp up to the semester.  I have them write a paper on that using guided questions from me.  While I understand you're looking at the MBA level, these may be of use. I also saw where HBPS has a few ethics based case studies that appear to be recent--don't recall much there.

I use Death of a Salesman and may also use All My Sons next year (our ethics is split over two semesters). I gave them a number of readings about why good leaders do unethical things and I'd be happy to share the list of readings. I really cobble together quite a few readings generally as I haven't found a text I like.

    Hi Jeff,

I have a few suggestions for you.

There is a companion CD-Rom to Manuel Velasquez' Business Ethics: Concepts and Cases textbook which consists of 8 video segments from ABC News detailing various ethical dilemmas in modern society. They include the fall of Enron, Unocal in Burma, Ford and Firestone, and other high-profile examples. The textbook contains additional cases and questions as well as exercises related to the CD-Rom case studies. I recommend these because they seem workable within the length of the course (and provide a multimedia element).

My second suggestion might be a stretch for an MBA program (might be more appropriate for an MPA program) but I have several resources (books, case studies) on ethical leadership in national security and intelligence. I would argue that the core issues of these ethical dilemmas are similar to those in the private sector, but the context might seem out of step with the rest of the course material. Alternatively, students might enjoy the novelty! If you are interested, send me a note.

    Thanks,

    Karen Alexandre

I have used The Tuskegee Experiment, it is very powerful and brings out many ethical dilemmas. It is difficult to know exactly when the line was crossed, and some will say it wasn't. This brings out even more interesting discussion about why things really aren't so black and white.

Speaking of the Tuskegee experiment, the HBO film "Miss Evers' Boys" is a magnificent ethics film about the experiment, depicted from the perspective of the lead nurse who feels trapped within the organization that is conducting the experiment. We use it in virtually all of our ethics courses here at the Marriott School, and it generates outstanding discussions about obedience/dissent, whistle-blowing, ethical reasoning, decision-making, etc.

You gave to date gotten some really good suggestions.  My offering is not the typical suggestion (although all these suggestions have been very good) - I like Johnson, (2004) "Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership: Casting Light or Shadow"  Full discloser, Johnson was my discertation commitee chair, but I asked him to take that role because of his simple and holistic approach to organziaitnal leadership ethics.

Trust you will make a good decsion, there is so much good stuff to choose from.

Just out of curiosity, do you use this with MBAs or undergrads. It would be great if folks could specify where they use these materials....my experience is that MBAs (full-time anyway) are a MUCH harder group in which to talk about ethics so I'm particularly interested in what works with them. I did use the Kidney Allocation exercise this fall but had to make the connection re: allocation of scarce resources crystal clear for them to "accept" the non-business aspect of this exercise (conversely the evening MBA students and Executive MBA class loved it). Thanks.

I also saw where HBPS has a few ethics based case studies that appear to be recent--don't recall much there.

I use the film "Miss Evers' Boys" in a senior leader development MBA. As both Jeff and I stated, (I forgot to use the name of the film!) the "cheating ethics" happens so gradually that sometimes it isn't recognized and it brings out really  great discussion points.

    Nancy,

We use "Miss Evers' Boys" in both the undergrad and masters-level ethics courses. There is the occasional rare complaint from undergrads that the movie isn't exciting enough (no car chases!), but overall the film has played extremely well to both audiences.

    Hello.

Two books that have worked for us here at Clemson are

  • 12.  Materials for ethics courses

    Dear Jeff,

I think that there are lots of relevant materials in the archived messages on this list-serve, if one does a search there.

    Do you know:

Ciulla, J.B. (Ed.) (2003)  The Ethics of Leadership.  Belmont, CA: Thomson Wadsworth.  ISBN 0-15-506317-0.

Excellent, varied readings - though it needs a new edition to correct some errors made by the publisher in editing.

I also draw on the Dalai Lama's (1999) Ethics for the New Millennium.  New York: Riverhead Books.  ISBN 1-57322-025-6.
I use it to present a world leader's perspective on the importance of ethics from a non-western mindset.

Best wishes in your course development - I'd like to see the syllabus.   I published an article last spring on developing integrity for leaders - the published version can be seen online through your university library:
Goldman Schuyler, K. (2010).  Increasing Leadership Integrity through Mind Training and Embodied Learning, Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research, Vol. 62, No. 1, 21–38.  © 2010 American Psychological Association 1065-9293/10/$12.00 DOI: 10.1037/a0018081. http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/cpb/62/1/

I'd be happy to share my two syllabi related to ethics if you are interested, but neither is only about ethics for leadership.  Course titles are Organizational Ethics and Social Responsibility  and Ethical and Legal Issues in Organizational Studies:  Dilemmas of Practice and Research.
