Working Sustainably
Research Meets Practice
April 1, 2, and 3, 2009
A Conference Integrating
Business, Government, NGOs, Venture Capital, and Independent Research
Sponsored by
Albers Business Ethics Initiative and Entrepreneurship Center
at
Seattle University
Seattle, Washington
Sustainability means promoting environmental integrity, economic development, and social justice at the same time. There is a growing consensus that business, government, and NGOs need to work together to promote this integrated notion of sustainability. We also focus on venture capitalists, who are rapidly increasing funding of sustainable business. These constituencies often have difficulty meeting each other and another important constituency: the international research community in universities and other research institutions. This conference is designed to encourage interaction and cooperation among these five constituencies.
We are now interviewing sustainability officers in companies (Fortune 500 and smaller), governmental entities, NGOs, and venture capitalists in the Northwest to find out how they are addressing this integrated notion of sustainability. What information do they need? What are the emerging issues? We will use these interviews to generate a set of topics for an international call for papers that will be sent in September 2008. The conference itself is scheduled for April 1, 2, and 3, 2009 in Seattle, Washington.
The conference will:
· Increase knowledge transfer among the five constituencies
· Facilitate ongoing relationships among the five constituencies
· Engage with the media
· Publish findings in book or journal form
The conference will be attractive to organizations seeking the latest research on sustainability and to researchers who want to address current problems facing decision-makers who are promoting sustainability.
