Applicants for the assistantships should hold a master's degree in public administration, public policy, or a related field such as business, economics, political science, or sociology. Applicants with master's degrees in other fields also will be considered. They should submit the scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), with official verification; three letters of reference attesting to both academic and professional capabilities (at least two of the three letters should be from academic sources, such as prior professors or academic advisers); a letter outlining applicant's background and academic objectives; a recent personal vita; and a substantial academic paper written for a previous graduate course (e.g., a seminar paper). International applicants should also submit their scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
Applications will be received through Penn State University's Graduate Application website: http://www.gradsch.psu.edu. Those applicants who apply for full-time study and request financial assistance will be considered for these assistantships.
Once the PhD program admission committee reviews applications, qualified applicants will be interviewed by the committee members, in-person or via the Internet, to determine the compatibility of their academic and research interests with those of the faculty members in the program.
Application deadline: January 30, 2014, but late applications will be considered if assistantships are still available.
