Research Fellow
Starting in September 2018
Since the launch in 2003 of the Social Entrepreneurship Chair, ESSEC Business School has developed a unique expertise with regard to education and research in the fields of entrepreneurship, strategy and management of private initiatives serving the common good.
In January 2011, ESSEC Business School furthered this development and launched a new Philanthropy Chair, capitalizing on the expertise already acquired in social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, impact measurement, and equal opportunities in higher education. The Chair is part of ESSEC's Centre of Excellence for Management and Society (CEMAS).
The mission of the ESSEC Philanthropy Chair is to produce and to diffuse knowledge on philanthropy and its role in society. We aim to enhance the understanding of contemporary philanthropy, to promote more clear-sighted, strategic and effective giving, and to reinforce philanthropy's contribution to todays' pressing social problems. We understand philanthropy broadly as all voluntary transfers of resources from private individuals and organizations (corporations and foundations), with the goal to serve the common good.
In order to accomplish its mission, the Chair has set itself the following objectives:
- To further theoretical and applied research on philanthropy whilst meeting standards of academic excellence,
- To develop academic research networks and best practices in philanthropy,
- To promote and further an understanding of the role of philanthropy in Europe and how it is practiced by individuals and private organizations,
- To address key players in the philanthropic sector, strengthening their capabilities for analysis, management, and governance.
The Philanthropy Chair is held by Professor Anne-Claire Pache, Member of the Faculty in the Public and Private Policy Department. Dr. Arthur Gautier is the Chair's Executive Director and a Researcher at ESSEC Business School.
The Chair benefits from the generous support of renowned partner organizations in the field of philanthropy: Fondation de France, Daniel & Nina Carasso Foundation, Edmond de Rothschild Foundations, Bettencourt Schueller Foundation, and Caritas France Foundation. It was created and developed with the help of ESSEC Alumni and private donors.
The ESSEC Philanthropy Chair is opening a full-time Research Fellow position to reinforce its research efforts and to develop its activities. The position opens in September 2018 and is offered for a period of 1 year (12 months). It can be renewed after 1 year if both parties agree to extend their collaboration.
We are looking for a highly motivated junior scholar whose research interests and skills are aligned with the Chair's objectives. We welcome applications from both doctoral students and post-doctoral applicants. We are particularly interested in candidates who believe that academic excellence and practical relevance for society should go hand in hand.
The Research Fellow will work under the supervision of the Chair's Executive Director and the scientific responsibility of the Chair Holder. The work environment will require both English and French: we strongly encourage applicants who are bilingual or fluent in both languages.
Located at ESSEC Business School's main campus in Cergy-Pontoise (45 minutes from Paris).
Salary and benefits commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
Specific duties will include:
(1) contribute to the definition of the research agenda of the Chair
(2) manage and contribute to specific research projects within the Chair's agenda
(3) disseminate research findings, in particular through peer-reviewed publications and academic conferences
(4) manage and contribute to the production of case studies, reports, and other materials accessible for practitioners and the general public
(5) assist with coordination, fundraising, event planning, and reporting
Qualifications required:
- Doctorate or Ph.D. in management or social sciences (enrolled or defended)
- Knowledge of and interest for the field of philanthropy
- Ability to publish research in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals
- Ability to manage projects and to organize events with diverse publics
- Effective written and oral communication skills
- Full professional proficiency (C2, ILR4) in English and French
