    Hello everybody:

I hope everybody had a wonderful 4th of July. As we celebrate the ideals of
democracy, we are witnessing democracy recession across several countries. Many
governments are cracking down on civil society, ostensibly pushing back against
foreign meddling in their domestic affairs. In part, this is due to the inflow
of western funds to create civil society abroad. This raises important issues
whether this foreign-funded model corresponds with the intellectual rationale
for a vibrant, endogenous and locally-rooted civic sector as outlined by
Tocqueville, Coleman, Putnam, Ostrom, and others. Here is a piece we published
today in Washington Post's Monkey Cage on the global crackdown on civil
    society.
