    Faculty Position Opening in the Economics of Climate Change

    School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan

    The School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) at the University of Michigan (UM) seeks applicants for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Economics of Climate Change.  Applicants should have a Ph.D. in economics, public policy, applied and agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline.

    We seek applicants who conduct economics and public policy research on climate change impacts, mitigation, and/or adaptation to climate change.  Applicants' substantive areas of application may include one or more of the major domains of climate-related impacts (e.g., land-use, infrastructure and built environment, public health, agriculture, coastal zones, extreme events).  Applicants also may conduct research on mitigation (e.g., renewable energy, cap-and-trade) or adaptation (e.g., land-use change).  In addition to an economics perspective, we seek candidates with experience, skills, and interest in integrating knowledge from multiple disciplinary domains, through theories, models or other methods, such as integrated assessment approaches.

    SNRE's mission is to contribute to the protection of the Earth's resources and the achievement of a sustainable society.  The School contributes new scientific knowledge, visionary leadership, and trained professionals toward that end.  The faculty of the School is diverse, with natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, and designers working collectively in an integrative setting.  A professional school set within a major research university, SNRE provides a model of interdisciplinary and applied research and a focal point of research and teaching on sustainability.

    The School offers a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environment and a professional M.S. degree in six fields of study: conservation ecology; environmental informatics; sustainable systems; environmental policy and planning; behavior, education and communication; and environmental justice.  The School also offers a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.).  The student body includes over 350 M.S./M.L.A. and 60 doctoral students.  SNRE also participates in multiple cross-campus degree programs, including an undergraduate Program in the Environment degree, dual degrees with the Schools of Architecture and Urban Planning, Business, Engineering, Law, and Public Health, and offers several graduate certificate programs.  Additional information about the School can be found at www.snre.umich.edu.

    This position was awarded to SNRE under UM's Interdisciplinary Faculty Initiative as a "cluster" hire, which brings together new and existing faculty in a cross-disciplinary research and teaching effort.  This cluster includes a previously filled position on Climate Modeling and Integrated Assessment of Climate Change in the Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences.  The successful candidate for the SNRE position will work on topics in economics and public policy research, and will also help build greater cohesion and capability among the large and diverse group of UM faculty interested in climate change, integrated assessment, and related issues.  The successful candidate should consequently possess the broad interests, skills, and temperament to interact effectively and build collaborations with other researchers, within SNRE and elsewhere.  Lastly, the successful candidate will join a group of environmental economists across the university, which (in addition to SNRE) includes faculty from the Economics Department, the Ross School of Business, and the Ford School of Public Policy.

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    1) Develop a widely-recognized research program that attracts external funding and contributes to the interdisciplinary mission of the School;

    2) Mentor and supervise doctoral and master's students;

    3) Support SNRE's teaching mission at both graduate and undergraduate levels (three courses per year, balancing core or required courses with courses of the faculty's choice, as determined in consultation with the Associate Dean of Academic Programs);

    4) Contribute to the stewardship of SNRE, the University, and relevant professions through service and collaboration.

    The position will be filled at the assistant professor (tenure-track) level.  A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is required.

    Applications should include a cover letter, CV, a research paper, and a concise personal statement describing your vision and plans for research and teaching.  Three letters of reference should be sent under separate cover.

    To apply, submit application materials (in a single PDF file), via the following web address: http://snre.umich.edu/form/application_faculty_position_in_economics_of_climate_change.  Closing date for applications is November 15, 2014.  We will conduct screening interviews at the ASSA meetings in Boston in January 2015.  The position is expected to be filled by September 1, 2015.

    The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity employer,
    and individuals from under-represented groups are encouraged to apply.
