AOM Professional Development Workshop: Leveraging the Power of Grounded Theory
Primary Sponsor: Research Methods Division (RM)
Saturday, August 2, 10:15AM - 1:15PM at Philadelphia Downtown Hotel (Room: Philadelphia North)
*******************
This three hour workshop is intended to provide a lively, interactive forum where participants can engage in addressing some of the ‘burning’ questions regarding GT as a research methodology. Through dialogue and interactive exploration in both plenary and small group discussions, participants will explore popular myths about GT (e.g., that GT is a qualitative research methodology only, that GT is too difficult for a novice researcher, etc.) and gain practical advice and direction in undertaking a GT study. Specifically, the workshop will:
a) Probe burning questions about GT methodology and clarify misconceptions that have emerged
about GT methodology as it was originally conceived.
b) Explore issues regarding various approaches to using GT and the use of both qualitative and
quantitative data in GT studies
c) Address challenges encountered in publishing GT studies
d) Provide an opportunity for networking with others using GT methodology
This workshop will be of particular value to early career researchers and others new to GT. Plenary discussions will elicit and explore participants’ questions regarding principles and methods that constitute a good GT study. Small group discussions, facilitated by experienced grounded theorists, will afford workshop participants the opportunity to share their experiences in using GT, raise specific challenges or difficulties they are encountering in conducting current research projects and/or in publishing GT studies. The goal here is to ‘troubleshoot’ and help resolve obstacles to their moving forward in their research and publication efforts.
This workshop is open to all attendees and does not require pre-registration. We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia!
