Hi:
Sometimes these problems occur because of a combination of a systemic shortcoming (usually ambiguity) and the nature of the scholar's research. Note: this typically occurs when we are doing behavioral research, mostly with students. Sometimes having a research student pool, like most psychology departments have, best serves these researchers both in keeping the data collection ethical and enhancing the productivity of the researcher. Subject: [SIM] Managing alleged breaches of codes of ethics
Dear Colleagues,
I am seeking advice regarding research (either already published or currently being conducted) on how allegations of ethics code breaches are managed by organizations.
The questions which I am seeking to address are: What are considered to be "best practice" procedures for how an ethics officer or ethics committee should handle complaints of breach with regard to both the complainant and the person who is the subject of the complaint? Are there any potential practical and/or ethical conflicts between transparency of the process (of investigating and adjudicating such complaints) and anonymity (or some level of protection) of the complainant? Is there any research which shows that favouring transparency of the process over anonymity/protection of the complainant discourages potential complainants?
Kindly respond directly to my email address and I will provide a summary of responses to the list.
This is an area about which I know very little, so please don't resist from stating the obvious.
