Dear SIM colleagues and friends (please recheck all days - times -
locations against the electronic and printed programs and do not rely
on this message content which could contain inaccuracies),
The Academy of Management meetings begin Friday 3 August for the
doctoral consortium (invitation only, of course). The pre-conference
professional development workshop (PDW) program operates on Saturday
4 August and Sunday 5 August. The regular conference program begins
on Monday 6 August (through Wednesday 8 August, approximately
noon). I draw your attention to several key elements of the
programming for your scheduling (if interested and available).
Saturday 4 August - The traditional Saturday night SBE-SIM keynote
address will take place at the Westin Hotel (SBE conference site)
located at 99 South 17th Street at Liberty Place. (Check for the room
when you arrive.) Rob Phillips has distributed the details already
by listserve. Basically the address begins at 6 pm - followed by a
reception. Robert Frank (of Cornell) is the speaker.
Sunday 5 August - For individuals interested and not involved at the
same time in one of the other PDW activities, the research roundtable
workshop session (11am-12:30pm) in Loew's Washington A (third floor)
will feature three (3) roundtables (with planned rotation) concerning
stakeholder theory and business ethics (Andy Wicks), stakeholder
theory and corporate political strategy (Nicholas Dahan and Doug
Schuler), and an open discussion on possible lessons of the Duke
ethics scandal (Marc Orlitzky and Duane Windsor). This information
has been distributed already by listserve.
Monday 6 August - The SIM welcome session is scheduled for 8:30-9 am
in Loews Washington A (third floor). Refreshments have been
ordered. Newcomers to SIM are particularly invited for recognition
(which will also occur at the business meeting). So plan to show up
to start the conference.
Monday 6 August - The SIM business meeting is scheduled for 5:30-6:30
pm or so roughly, in Loews Commonwealth C. Please plan to
attend. The division's awards will be announced and presented. Two
member representatives to the SIM nominating committee will be
elected. Committee chairs, program chairs, and officers will make
various reports.
Monday 6 August - The SIM social hour / reception will be held
jointly with ONE (celebrating its new divisional status) and
PNP. The reception is scheduled to begin at 7 pm, so I plan to cut
the business meeting short (assuming business transacted efficiently
and effectively) in favor of a short break (if possible) prior to the
reception beginning. The reception is presently scheduled in Loews
Regency Ballroom B. A drink ticket will be distributed to each SIM
member attending the business meeting. Individuals not able to
attend the business meeting should see the SIM division chair (Duane)
at the reception itself for a drink ticket. Tickets are first come -
first serve until exhausted (when a cash bar should kick in). Our
current operating plan for the reception (which will include limited
food) is to limit types of drinks (there will be so many wines,
beers, spirits, soft drinks, water) until exhausted. The method,
adopted by the three division chairs (SIM, ONE, PNP) in consultation,
fixes the reception budget; and also minimizes post-reception
recordkeeping (we can count any remainders for reconciliation with
the number of tickets used by each division on an agreed allocation scheme.
A special appreciation is due to Brad Googins, executive director of
Boston College's Center for Corporate Citizenship, and our colleage
Sandra Waddock of Boston College, for the Center's continuing
generous support. The Center for Corporate Citizenship is again this
year providing the financial award for the SIM best paper winner and
also funds for support of the SIM reception.
The Villanova University Center for Responsible Leadership &
Governance, whose director is our colleague Jonathan Doh, is kindly
supporting the Sumner Marcus Service Award. The Center will handle
the cost of the plaque; and will donate $500.00 to an appropriate
charitable activity of the winner's choice in consultation with the Center.
As in previous years, the Beard Center for Leadership in Ethics of
Duquesne University, whose director is our colleague Jim Weber, will
help support the doctoral consortium dinner.
A couple of final notes. We owe an enormous debt to our Philadelphia
program chair Linda Trevino and our PDW program chair Ann Buchholtz,
as well as to the various committee chairs, co-chairs, and members
and various officers and representatives working behind the scenes
for a successful conference. We cannot praise these individuals too
much for their efforts on our behalf. It has been an honor and a
privilege to serve as your elected division chair for the past year
(and I am looking forward to August 8). I hope to see many of you in
Philadelphia shortly.
