We invite members across the AOM community to join us for the PDW "Navigating an Academic Career as PhD Moms" on Friday August 7th, from 8:00am to 10:30am at the Pinnacle Vancouver Harbourfront Hotel, Port of Singapore Room.
Organizers: Madeline Toubiana (University of Alberta) & Luciana Turchick Hakak (University of the Fraser Valley)
Panelists and Roundtable Leaders: Nada Basir (University of Ontario Institute of Technology), Judith Clair (Boston College), Katy DeCelles (University of Toronto), Jennifer Jennings (University of Alberta), Lisa Nishii (Cornell University), Kristie Rogers (University of Kansas), Trish Ruebottom (Brock University), Reut Livne-Tarandach (University of Oregon) and Susana Velez-Castrillon (University of West Georgia).
In this PDW we aim to bring together scholars from across the academy to foster discussion about the strategies used to confront the daily challenges of juggling and/or balancing the role of academic and mother. With these challenges in mind, and based on the success and feedback from last year's PDW on motherhood and academy, this PDW will focus on four topics that are central to mothers and academics' success: Caregiving, Partnership, Job Choices and Tenure. Our esteemed panelists, also women who are academics and mothers, will be invited to discuss and provide insights and practical tips on the four topics. Panel presentations will be followed by roundtable discussions. The objective of the PDW is to create a community of scholars who can share strategies, tips and ideas for how to work successfully in these two roles, thereby developing the skills of "PhD Moms" to navigate some of these challenges and increase their success and prevalence within the field.
If you have (or are thinking about having) children, do not miss this invaluable opportunity to connect with other academics juggling motherhood!
