    Dear colleagues,

You are invited to attend the Academy of Management 2011's Professional Development Workshop in San Antonio:

Where West Meets East and South:

Environmental and Social Issues in Africa
    Sponsors: ONE, IM, SIM, ITC
    Scheduled: Saturday, Aug 13 2011 2:45PM - 4:45PM at Marriott Rivercenter in Salon D

While environmental and social issues exist across the globe, Africa seems to accumulate both major environmental and social problems. The list of ecological disasters is long, including, among others, the impact of the over-use of pesticides, environmental degradation due to uncontrolled industrial activities, and oil spills. Twenty-six out of the 30 poorest countries in the world are located in Africa, and violence is still prevalent in many of these countries. Yet, in spite of the importance of environmental and social issues in Africa, very few published papers in mainstream management journals use African data to explore these issues.

The goal of the PDW is to advance the debate around environmental and social issues in the African context, and to help build a network of interested scholars to exchange research experiences and plans. To do so, we invited a group of scholars with expertise in research in the African context to discuss what they regard as the most important current environmental and social issues in Africa, and to help understand how the challenges associated with data collection in Africa can be overcome. The panelists include:

    -          Robert Grosse; Thunderbird

    -          Dima Jamali; American U. of Beirut

    -          Ans Kolk; U. of Amsterdam

    -          David B. Zoogah; Morgan State U.

    -          Miguel Rivera-Santos; Babson College (Organizer)

No pre-registration is required. We hope to see you there!

    Best regards,
