MNE Strategies for Reducing Political Conflict and
Promoting Positive Social Change
Sunday, August 5th*10:00am to 12:00pmIn this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) we will explore the challenge that violent conflict poses to both MNEs and the host countries in which they operate. Possible strategic responses available to MNEs, such as partnering with NGOs, developing other types of collaborative partnerships, and adopting strategies that indirectly influence the conflict, will also be discussed. More broadly, we will talk about how the MNE can effectively act as an agent of social change and why and how such actions benefit the firm and the host country. Given that this is a relatively new but growing area of research, we will discuss issues related to research development and publication strategies. In the latter part of the PDW, we will break into groups and discuss the research interests of attendees. More broadly, we will address the question of how to move the research on business as an agent for social change forward.*No formal registration is necessary but an email expression of interest is appreciated (oetzelj@american.edu).Presenters include: Kathleen Getz (American U.), Jennifer Oetzel (American U.), Alfred Marcus (U. of Minnesota), Mazhar Islam (U. of Minnesota), Michelle Westermann-Behaylo (George Washington U.), Gisele Belem (U.
