    To all,

I hope that many of you are coming to Philadelphia for the Academy of Management program! Jamie Hendry (SIM PDW Chair) and I (SIM Program Chair) look forward to seeing you during an exciting program of workshops, symposia, paper sessions, and of course social events from August 1 to 5. This is the first of several updates about the Social Issues in Management scholarly program, which formally starts on Monday, August 4. There are a number of exciting events on the weekend prior, however, that I wanted to alert you to.

    Saturday, August 2

The SIM/Society for Business Ethics joint keynote address and reception will be held at the SBE hotel, which is the Radisson Blu Warwick Hotel (220 South 17th Street). The keynote address will be given by Jim Walsh (University of Michigan) in the Grand Ballroom at 5:30 pm, followed by the reception at 6:30 pm in the Crystal Ballroom.

    Sunday, August 3

There are a number of SIM-sponsored symposia and paper sessions that will be occurring on Sunday, in addition to a SIM Salon and Sunday evening reception. Three symposia submitted to SIM are on the All Academy Theme program:

Empty Words? – The Contested Nature of the UN Global Compact (co-sponsored with ONE): 11:15 am to 12:45 pm in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, room 103A

The Power of Words We RARELY Use: Dignity, Rights, and Responsibility (co-sponsored with MSR and CMS): 1:00 to 2:30 pm in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, room 121B

Corporations, Citizenship and Digital Technologies: New Media, Metaphors and Organizational Forms (co-sponsored with OCIS): 4:30 to 6:00 pm in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, room 118A

There are also four SIM discussion paper sessions scheduled for Sunday (all in the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Washington Room B):

International SIM Research: 11:15 to 12:45 pm

Roundtable on SIM Research: 1:00 to 2:30 pm

Roundtable on CSP and CSR Research: 2:45 to 4:15 pm

Roundtable on Theory-Building SIM Research: 4:30 to 6:00 pm

The three finalists for the SIM Best Dissertation award will be presenting their research on Sunday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Commonwealth D:

    Joel Gehman, University of Alberta

Anna Kim Hyun Seung, Ivey Business School, University of Western Ontario

Vivek Soundararajan, School of Management, Royal Holloway, University of London

And last but by no means least is the SIM Salon, a new event for this year. The idea of the SIM Salon is to have a fun and interesting exchange of ideas on Sunday evening, followed by a reception. The theme for the SIM Salon is "A Collection of Words that We Should be Using More Frequently in SIM Research." Here's the collection of words that the panelists (Stephen Brammer, Gerald Cavanaugh, Heather Elms, Jean-Pascal Gond, Michelle Greenwood, and Sandra Waddock) will be talking about: character, change, pictures (although not the word, actual pictures!), must, performativity, and stewardship. The SIM Salon is from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Loews Philadelphia Hotel (Washington Room C), followed by a reception at 7:30 in Regency Ballroom C2.

    More to follow!
