    Dear SIM Division members,

I am sorry to inform you that Ann Buchholtz, a much-beloved member and leader of the Social Issues in Management division, died yesterday in Livingston, NJ as a result of complications from recent surgery. Ann was Professor of Leadership and Ethics and Research Director of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers University. She received her Ph.D. from New York University and also served on the faculties of the University of Connecticut and the University of Georgia. Ann's service to the division and the Academy of Management was extensive, including service as SIM PDW, Program, and Division Chair and a just-completed term on the AOM Board of Governors. Ann received the Sumner Marcus Award for her outstanding contributions of scholarship and service to the Social Issues in Management field at the 2015 Academy of Management annual meeting in August.

Detailing Ann's many contributions of scholarship, teaching, and service to both field and community only tells part of the story of her influence. Ann was a mentor to SIM doctoral students and new faculty members for decades. In gathering information about her in preparation for the Sumner Marcus Award this August, someone wrote this to me: "She is the 'Embodiment of the Ethic of Care'. She takes care of everyone-her colleagues, her students, her friends and her bosses. She's the kindest, most forgiving person I've ever seen." I think this quote captures who Ann was for those of us who knew her, and her absence will be felt by all of us.

Ann was a true leader in so manty ways – scholar, textbook author, doctoral student mentor, Academy governor and more – but more importantly a wonderful and caring person that so many of us called a friend.  She will be missed.

    Terribly sad for this news.
I just arrived in Verona, my hometown, where I have met last time Ann, a few years ago. She was teaching business ethics to UGA students here, and we were able to share a nice lunch in valpolicella's sunny spring. Besides her leading work, I could appreciate how incredibly caring and friendly she was, full of encouragement and so supportive for younger colleagues.

As many of you know, Ann also worked tirelessly with the AOM Ethics Committee, always with her usual upbeat attitude.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with her on that and other SIM issues over the years.  This was quite a shock.

    Dear SIMians,

Most everyone in SIM knew Ann, and to know Ann was to know her kindness. You might also know that her concern was always with others, and not with herself. Thus, it may come as no surprise that she expressly didn't want a memorial service. Nonetheless, there's no doubt that so many will want to share their praise of Ann's character and contributions. One place to do this is on the SIM Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/simdivision. Do of course feel free to continue to share your thoughts with everyone on the list-serv, but if you post on the Facebook page, it's a record that will have a bit more permanency.

Some of us have been in touch with Ann's brother, to see if he might have any preferences for ways to honor Ann. I'm also working with Rutgers staff to determine how to name a fund of some sort in her honor. In addition, SIM leadership is trying to sort out how best to honor Ann's legacy – perhaps with a named award of some sort. If you have any thoughts on any of the above, do please get in touch.

    Best,

    Mike

As many of you know, Ann also worked tirelessly with the AOM Ethics Committee, always with her usual upbeat attitude.  I thoroughly enjoyed working with her on that and other SIM issues over the years.  This was quite a shock.

    I miss her already!

    Dear all-

I had a vision about Ann before I met her in 2007.  I'd known that she wrote with Archie Carroll and I thought maybe she was some unreachable 'goddess' of Business and Society.  Turns out, she was a "Rock Star" of Business and Society--she knew business, she knew society, but most of all, she understood people's concerns.  Ann was utterly reachable and so incredibly approachable, and a very good teacher of many things.  I too will miss her presence.  I am sorry for her loss in SIM and IABS as well.

Thank you, Harry, for this warm and sensitive announcement regarding the loss of our dear colleague, Ann. Priscilla and I were stunned when I got the news yesterday. When I was department head at Georgia and led the hiring of Ann in January 1997, I felt we had a special person. Only with the passage of time could I come to fully understand how extraordinary  Ann was. Ann was a highly valued, close friend, colleague, and treasured co-author. She will be sorely missed by us all. Your tribute to her is excellent and I thank you for it.

I think this quote captures who Ann was for those of us who knew her, and her absence will be felt by all of us.

This is a very sad news.
My first meeting with Ann was at the IABS meeting in Florence, in Italy: a wonderful friendly and caring person, always encouraging and positive.
with such a humility that no one would imagine she was one of the leading ladies in our field.
We will miss her warm welcome 'good to see you' with her charming smile.
Also in Europe, we will remember Ann.

Ann was one of the best people I have ever known. Her enthusiasm for life was contagious. It was almost impossible to refrain from smiling in her presence. When she was with you she made you feel like you were the most important person in the world. She exuded joy, peace, humor, love, acceptance, tolerance, and appreciation. When faced with a challenge, I often ask myself "what would Ann do?" I am so thankful to have had her as a friend and role model and even more thankful that I was able to spend time with her last month in Vancouver. This one is going to hurt for a while.
