    Doctoral Student Consortium (Invitation Only)

    Saturday, August 6, 2016

    9:00 AM – 3:30 PM

    Anaheim, California, United States

    Consortium Organizers: Dr. Joy E. Beatty and Dr. Oscar Holmes IV

     

    The 2016 Gender and Diversity in Organizations division doctoral consortium will include a diverse group of speaker panels and activities designed to provide doctoral students with a realistic preview of scholarly life including: practices to build effective teaching, techniques for developing productive research collaborations, and a review of editors' expectations and advice for drafting quality manuscripts. Students will also have the opportunity for more personalized connections and feedback through a mentor-match lunch, in which students are paired with a more senior scholar based on the student's research interests. The consortium is a great place to meet other doctoral students with similar interests for collaboration and support.

     

    Session 1: Developing Your Teaching Skills

    Panelists:  Laquita Blockson, Research Fellow, CUEED, Rutgers Business School; David Kaplan, Saint Louis University; Alison Konrad, University of Western Ontario Ivey Business School;.

    Faculty members spend a significant amount of time teaching, and this session offers strategies for both effective and efficient teaching. Our panelists have experience teaching a range of diversity-themed courses.

     

    Session 2: Crafting Publishable Papers-Editors' Panel

    Journals Represented & Panelists: Academy of Management Review, Belle Rose Ragins, Group & Organization Management, TBD, International Journal of Human Resource Management, TBD, Organization, Patrizia Zanoni.

    Journal editors and associate editors from journals that focus on GDO themes will offer advice on the publication process and preparing publishable manuscripts.  Topics include how to choose an appropriate outlet for a paper, how to tailor the structure of a paper for different journals, and how to successfully navigate the review process.

     

    Mentor – Match Lunch

    Students will be paired with GDO scholars for informal mentoring and conversations over lunch.

     

    Session 3: Developing Collaborative Research Relationships

    Panelists: Stephan Böhm, University of St. Gallen; Eden King, George Mason University; Patrick McKay, Rutgers University

    This panel of award-winning and prolific researchers will share strategies for leveraging one's research through effective collaborations. Topics include: developing new collaborations with research sites and co-authors, and advice for managing possible issues that can arise in the collaboration process. Panelists will also share their personal experiences in both successful and challenging collaborations.

     

    Session 4: Becoming a Junior Faculty Member:  Realistic Job Preview

    Panelists: Stephanie Creary, Cornell University; David Dwertmann, Rutgers University; Sabrina Volpone, University of New Mexico

    This panel of research productive, pre-tenure faculty provide a realistic job preview into the life of a junior faculty member, and strategies they have used to learn and juggle their many roles.

     

    Session 5:  Getting Involved in GDO

    Panelists:  GDO Executive Committee Members

    The GDO division president and members of the executive committee discuss opportunities for volunteering, and invite doctoral students to make use of the rich social network in the division.

     

    Registration Information for Participants:

    Students interested in attending the Gender and Diversity in Organizations Doctoral Student Consortium are requested to submit a vita and a brief statement explaining their interest to both Dr. Joy Beatty (jebeatty@umich.edu) and Dr. Oscar Holmes IV (Oscar.HolmesIV@Rutgers.edu). After approval, students will be given registration information to submit to the Academy registration system (RegOnline). Students must first register for the 2016 Annual Meeting before registering for the GDO doctoral student consortium. Space is limited, so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Please contact Dr. Beatty or Dr. Holmes at the above email addresses with any questions about the consortium.
