If you have experienced a "diversity dilemma" (described below) in the classroom that you are willing to share with us for our AOM 2015 PDW entitled "Facilitating Faculty Responses to Diversity Dilemmas: Toward Creating Classroom Inclusiveness," please contact me at Lynn.Bowes-Sperry@wne.edu. Please note that if you share a story, we will keep your identity confidential unless you indicate otherwise.
We define a "diversity dilemma" as a situation involving sensitive diversity-related issues or decisions occurring in the classroom. We conceptualize diversity broadly (i.e., both visible dimensions of diversity such as gender and racio-ethnicity and less visible dimensions such as sexual orientation, religion, class, and disability). Diversity dilemmas include situations such as students making racist/sexist/homophobic comments during a class discussion, a female professor being propositioned or objectified during class by a male student, a professor avoiding class discussions on topics such as affirmative action due to fear that the discussion might get out of control, and a professor feeling awkward because she referred to her husband (rather than partner) during a class discussion or lecture, and so on.
Here is more information on the PDW ...
Facilitating Faculty Responses to Diversity Dilemmas: Toward Creating Classroom Inclusiveness
Scheduled on Aug 7 2015 from 1:45PM to 3:15PM at Vancouver Convention Centre in the Room 207 room
As educators, we often feel unprepared to address classroom concerns when talking about sensitive topics (e.g., race, sexual orientation, religion, etc.), or maintain an inclusive classroom. This PDW is an opportunity to contemplate real case studies involving diversity dilemmas, as well as practice appropriate responses; participants are invited to also join an electronic forum to continue the conversation, maintain network connections, and inspire research topics.
Take care, Lynn
