Dear Colleagues:
We invite you to consider submitting your work for the
4th International Colloquium on Corporate Political Activity, to be held in Brookville (Long Island), New York, from May 20-22, 2010.
This colloquium series is biannual, interdisciplinary and welcomes contributions from business, sociology and political science disciplines. It is a high profile event that brings together leading scholars who conduct interdisciplinary research on the interaction of business, government and society. It is focused on new and cutting edge research and creates a forum for high quality scholarly exchanges in a focused research context.
The theme of this year's colloquium is "The Governance Challenges of Corporate Political Activity". We aim to cover governance issues at two levels of analysis. First, from a broad societal perspective, that firms are becoming increasingly active politically raises issues of public governance. This raises such questions as: How does this phenomenon fit into a healthy democracy? Do firms have a legitimate right to influence public policy? Is there a point where firms become excessively influential? What are the benefits and negative consequences to society of firms being involved in politics? Second, from the firm level, how is corporate political activity managed and evaluated? Does corporate political activity create value for the firm and its shareholders? What are the effects of corporate political activity on the firm's relationships with other, non-government stakeholders?
The deadline for submission of a 3-5 page research proposal is November 14, 2009. Please direct your proposal to Doug Schuler, schuler@rice.edu, under the subject "International Colloquium on CPA."
Decisions on the research proposals selected will be made by December 14, 2009. The proposals selected will have a deadline of April 26, 2010 to submit their completed paper to the organizers.
Papers from this conference, plus other submissions, will be eligible for a special issue of
Business & Society, tentatively slated for 2012.
Attached is a full description of the Colloquium. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Organizers: Nicolas Dahan (
