2017 SIM Division Program: Call for Proposals

The SIM Division is a research community actively examining business ethics, stakeholder management, environmental management, social entrepreneurship, base-of-the-pyramid activities, corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, workplace diversity, corporate governance, business-government relations, corporate political strategy, and corruption, among other topics. SIM Division members engage in theory building and theory testing to understand the antecedents, impacts, and institutional settings that shape managerial and organizational decision-making around such topics. SIM Division members seek to understand responsible behavior and contributions to the greater good at the individual, organizational, and trans-organizational levels. Further, we study international impacts with regard to whether, how, and under what conditions managerial, organizational, and trans-organizational responses to social concerns vary based on formal and informal institutional contexts, including laws, customs, traditions, and beliefs.

SIM seeks proposals for the main program sessions (Monday, August 7 and Tuesday, August 8) at the 2017 Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA. The common logic of scholarship in the SIM Division is our shared interest in understanding responsible managerial behavior at the individual, organizational, and trans-organizational levels.

Paper and symposium proposals may choose to incorporate this year's conference theme: At the Interface. In her discussion of the theme posted on the AOM conference website, 2017 Academy Program Chair Carol Kulik notes:

"Interface:  A common boundary or interconnection between systems, concepts or human beings (Random House Dictionary, 2016):

That definition highlights the dual nature of interfaces. Interfaces establish boundaries that differentiate and separate; they mark a space where insiders can jointly define an organization's mission, develop an organizational identity, and participate in organizational activities. But interfaces also develop connections that facilitate communication, negotiation, and exchange across organizational boundaries.

Interfaces are increasingly relevant to today's organizations, as information, people, and other resources cross organizational boundaries at unprecedented rates.  An employee conversation held around the company water cooler today is likely to appear on social media tomorrow.  In the "gig economy," people may work as employees for only a few short weeks or a handful of quick shifts, moving from one organization to another without fully integrating into any of them.  And even when people are in traditional employment relationships with a single organization, mobile phones and Internet capabilities let them psychologically cross the organizational boundary dozens of times a day.  As traffic at the interface intensifies, how do we distinguish between insiders and outsiders, and identify who has a legitimate stake in influencing organizational missions, decisions, and activities?"

This year's theme clearly holds relevance within the SIM domain and has huge implications for the work we do in this division, as our trans-disciplinary research spans many boundaries within organizations.  Submitters are encouraged to reflect on the conceptual and practical links their workshop offers to this idea of the interface.

While we encourage proposals related to the conference theme, we also welcome non-thematic proposals about other topics within the SIM including, but not limited to, ethical decision-making, corporate social responsibility, corporate philanthropy, natural business ethics, stakeholder engagement and relations, environmental management, base-of-the-pyramid, social entrepreneurship, moral development, public policy, and corporate political strategy. PDW workshops may have a variety of structural forms, including roundtable discussions, interactive panels, site visits, service-learning activities, creative/artistic sessions, entrepreneurial incubators, and other activities that help SIM members develop professionally.

The SIM Division also sponsors numerous awards, including best paper, best student paper, best paper on the history of corporate responsibility, best dissertation, and best book. The winners of these awards are announced at the SIM business meeting held during the conference.

Submission Details: The submission deadline for papers and symposia is January 10, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Please try to submit earlier if possible.

Please pay particular attention to all of the submission guidelines. The Program Chairs have agreed to apply them rigorously and reject non-conforming papers. All submissions must be made online at http://aom.org/annualmeeting/submission/.  Please also email a copy of your proposal to David Wasieleski at: simprogram2017@gmail.com.
