    Dear fellow SIMians,

As part of our pre-program tradition, the Social Issues in Management Division will be offering a diverse set of developmental consortia and workshops during the Professional Development Workshop program. Our program has a mix of academic and developmental content.  Beginning on Friday morning and continuing all day on Saturday, our PDWs offer something for everyone. I invite you to join us and take part in our very compelling sessions.

The pre-conference program also features five conceptual workshops on Friday and Saturday. We include in the program a session dedicated to forming potential research partnerships for alleviating poverty.  Another session focuses on developing a new theory of business that includes social and environmental concerns. CSR research is also covered in a workshop exploring new institutional logics for engaging values and power.  And, ethics is explored as a means for facilitating innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities in a highly participative workshop.  Finally, SIMians should be interested in exploring new pedagogical approaches to the base of the pyramid through a session offering an interactive simulation game for participants.

On Friday, August 5th, please check out the following academic workshops:

8:00-10:00              "The Institutional Logics of CSR Research"

    Marriott, Newport Beach

1:00-3:00                 "Designing a Base of the Pyramid Enterprise"

    Marriott, Salon G

4:30-6:00                 "Developing a Theory of Business"

    Marriott, La Jolla

From 5:30 to 7:00 on Friday in Ballroom 1, Orange County at the Anaheim Marriott, please make note of the SIM Speed Networking session where participants will meet and connect about possible research collaborations. A cash bar will be part of this session so everyone will have an opportunity to mingle in a relaxed setting.

On Saturday, August 6th, we also have much to offer to our members.  The conceptual workshops are:

8:00-9:30       "Ethics as a Source of Innovation and Entrepreneurial Opportunity"

    Marriott, La Jolla

2:15-4:45       "Building Partnerships to Research Poverty Alleviation"

    Marriott, Salon J,K

The Research Committee has organized a cool new session this year. The Mid-Career Scholar Workshop provides a forum for faculty in the middle stages of their career to discuss common concerns and next steps for the future.  It is being held on Saturday from 2:00 to 4:00 in Grand Ballroom, G at the Anaheim Marriott.

Finally, on Saturday evening, please join us for the annual SIM-SBE (Society for Business Ethics) Joint Keynote Speaker and Reception at the Wyndham Anaheim Garden Grove (12021 Harbor Boulevard, Garden Grove; about a mile from the AOM hotels). The keynote address is from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Catalina B, and the reception is from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in Catalina A. This year's keynote address will be given by Saru Jayaraman. Ms. Jayaraman is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United and Director of the Food Labor Research Center at University of California, Berkeley. See you there.  It is a fabulous opportunity to connect members from both organizations to show our common interests.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week.
