    Call for Nominations

    2008 Annual Book Award

    DEADLINE EXTENDED

Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management

Each year, the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management honors one book for its contribution to scholarship in the discipline. The key criteria in selecting the book is that is must deserve to be read (either by virtue of its impact on the field or its potential to have impact on the field), its theoretical and conceptual development and/or empirical soundness.

This year's SIM Book Award Nominating and Selection Committee kindly requests your nominations for the 2008 Best Book Award.  Books that qualify must have been published (as indicated by the copyright date) in the five-year period from January 2003 through December 2007.  No edited volumes or textbooks will be considered.  The nomination deadline has been extended to March 31, 2008.

It is critical that we get SIM Division members active in the process.  We look forward to your suggestions.  Please help us in this important process for our division.

If you have any questions or comments about the procedure and eligible books, please contact David Wasieleski at 412-396-1092 or, on email at wasieleski@duq.edu.

    Best regards,

David Wasieleski, Chair, 2008 SIM Book Award Committee

Dear Members of the SIM Division,
We would like to make you aware of the "Cognition in the Rough" Workshop (CIR) as a possible outlet to help advance your research. CIR is a PDW sponsored and organized by the MOC Division, and is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 7th from 8:00 AM - 12 PM in Montreal.  CIR provides an excellent opportunity to discuss your research in an informal, collegial roundtable setting. Each roundtable has 2-3 scholars and 2-3 researchers, allowing plenty of time for discussion.  We are very pleased that the following scholars have already agreed to participate in Montreal:
Blake Ashforth, Neal Ashkanasy, Stuart Bunderson, Andrea Casey, Janet Dukerich, Dov Eden, Marlena Fiol, Peer Fiss, Raghu Garud, Elizabeth George, Tor Hernes, Gerard Hodgkinson, Susan Houghton, George Huber, Lynn Isabella, Glen Kreiner, Theresa Lant, Steve Mezias, Chet Miller, Sucheta Nadkarni, Mike Pfarrer, Rhonda Reger, Jenny Rudolph, David Schwandt, Sim Sitkin, and Dave Whetten
Past CIR participants have emphasized how much they have benefited from the feedback they received participating in the workshop (i.e., developing their theoretical models, planned methodology, etc). This feedback has been instrumental in helping them further develop and polish their research for publication in top academic journals.
To submit to CIR, your submission should include the following four sections:
    I. Brief abstract (not to exceed 150 words) and up to four keywords
II. Overview of research (not to exceed 1500 words)
    Research topic
    Conceptual framework
    Research questions
    Methods
Anticipated contributions to research/practice - key findings (if research is complete)
III. Challenges (to focus discussion) (not to exceed 250 words)
    IV. References
For those of you who may have presented your work at last year's meeting, CIR can be a great forum to help you put the finishing touches on your ideas before submitting your work to a journal.  For those of you who may have had a paper rejected at last year's meeting or at a journal, CIR is a great forum to help you get your work moving forward in the right direction.
Please send your submissions by June 15th, 2010 to cirpdw@gmail.com. Early submissions are encouraged as space is limited.

We look forward to receiving your submissions,
Morela Hernandez, University of Washington, Foster School of Business
David Wasieleski, Duquesne University, Palumbo-Donahue School of Business
Jeffrey Bednar, University of Michigan, Ross School of Business

What is "Business and Society 360"?

Business and Society 360 Book Series, published by Emerald and sponsored by the International Association for Business and Society, is an annual book series featuring a comprehensive discussion and review of the current "state" of the research and theoretical developments in a specific BAS area – a 360-degree look at a selected topic.  A "360-degree examination" of a research area involves an all around assessment using multiple field experts to supply an analysis and review for the purpose of achieving a full understanding of a topic.  Thus, each volume is a combination of invited and editorial reviewed chapters providing an overview of past work and highlighting cutting-edge research on the selected topic.

Background on Stakeholder Management as a Scholarly Area of Research

Stakeholder theory has been used for many purposes in a wide array of disciplines. Beginning with Ed Freeman's (1984) landmark book, Stakeholder Management, business management and strategy was transformed.  Stakeholder theory was intended to serve as a strategic management tool for business and society relationships in a capitalist system.  While it has broad scholarly appeal, it is still somewhat controversial and is considered to be empirically underdeveloped (Laplume, Sonpar, & Litz, 2008). Consensus has also not been reached on the underlying values driving decisions to balance stakeholder interests (Margolis & Walsh, 2003). It continues to challenge management assumptions related to the maximization of profit in organizations (Jensen, 2002). Firms are expected to elevate themselves from conventional economic objectives by considering the needs of multiple stakeholder groups (Verbeke & Tung, 2013). Debates over how to address legitimate interests are ongoing.  This volume seeks to address various components of stakeholder management to ultimately identify clear future directions for research in this area.
