Dear Fellow SIMians,
I hope you're wrapping up a healthy, enjoyable, and productive 2018 and revving up for a great 2019. I write not to blather on about all that, but instead to shamelessly self-promote. My publisher has slipped my new book just under the 2018 wire, and I fear it'll get lost in the holiday blitz, so I want to draw your attention to it. It's called Limits to Stakeholder Influence: Why the Business Case Won't Save the World. It encompasses two decades of scholarship on the business case for CSR, unraveling the mechanisms that drive it and the constraints they place on its effectiveness. It's obvious that even as we popularize and fine-tune the notion that it can pay to be good, the social and environmental problems we face are only growing, so after decades of work in this area, something clearly must be amiss. This book helps us to understand what's wrong. Nope, it doesn't provide easy solutions to our problems. But I think it does help push the field in new, more fruitful directions. Of course, that's for you to decide; today, I just want to do a little something to limit the likelihood that you'll overlook it.
You can find the book on the publisher's page here: https://www.e-elgar.com/shop/limits-to-stakeholder-influence. For some reason, it is listed as "out of stock" there right now. Another option is here, where it seems to be available: https://www.amazon.com/Limits-Stakeholder-Influence-Business-World/dp/1788970683. As with most things in scholarly publishing, the prices are higher than I'd prefer, so maybe you want a free preview, which you can get here: https://books.google.com/books?id=Q6V-DwAAQBAJ&pg=PA84&lpg=PA84&dq=limits+to+stakeholder+influence+barnett&source=bl&ots=7WChWMPmAA&sig=Ld_ozwtXovd83joghnlvMKg3V80&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiJ-OHv-cLfAhWHUt8KHbXlATAQ6AEwC3oECAoQAQ#v=onepage&q=limits%20to%20stakeholder%20influence%20barnett&f=false. Finally, please don't hesitate to get in contact with me, should you need access to anything specific.
Here's to a great 2019,
Mike
