Dear Fellow SIMians,
Thank you kindly for chiming in. 97% of you voted in favor of the proposed new SIM domain statement. As a result, it is now officially the SIM domain statement. In case you haven't memorized it, or memorialized it in a very tasteful tattoo (I'm looking at you, Shawn Berman), you can see it here: http://sim.aomonline.org/about.html.
When you click the above link to see the new domain statement, please do take the time to peruse our very snazzy new website. Jegoo Lee did a great job of revising and revitalizing it, despite being regularly buried under feet and feet of snow.
New website, new domain statement, new logo, recently revised constitution, 5-year review submitted . . . our dear Division is on very solid ground. But who wants to be on the ground? Let's fly already! And non-stop; enough with the year-long layovers! My metaphors are getting a bit odd I suppose, but what I'm getting at is that we need to be more than just the annual program in August. Indeed, Jamie Hendry is doing a fabulous job right now assembling our program for Vancouver, and Doug Schuler is putting together an awesome set of PDWs. We'll have a great time this summer in Canada. But we need to do more than just meet for a week in August.
SIM is not for the week! (Hey, I just made that up as I was typing – I like it! Say it out loud a time or two if you don't quite get it.) Our strength will be found in communicating and coordinating and collaborating year-round. Have a research idea? Let's bat it around. Publish something earth shattering? Teaching a terrific course? Share it! It's too easy to get isolated in your home institution. We need to build and sustain networks. And so that's where you come in, and stay in.
We have the infrastructure in place to facilitate better collaboration across SIM, beyond one week in August. But do we have the will? It's an empirical question. So far, it seems that the data does not support the hypothesis. But maybe in time. Please create and add to discussions on our Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages. Please send Jegoo your items to place on the website, as well as any ideas on revising the website. Please send to the list-serv things that you think ought to be shared with the masses. And please send me or any other member of SIM leadership your ideas on how to further facilitate collaboration across SIM. We're working on some additional ideas that we'll share with you once AOM has given us feedback on our five-year review document.
Onward and upward, my fellow SIMians!
Best,
Mike
