As we head into Halloween, here's a scary thought . . . the submission window for the 2013 Academy of Management Annual Meeting opens on November 6th.  That's eerily soon!  I hope you'll submit early, submit often (but not too often – rule of three plus three holds!), and submit quality content.  This year's theme is great, and the location is festive, so get your best stuff in on time to ensure you get on what will be a stellar program.  Details below.

SOCIAL ISSUES in MANAGEMENT Division (SIM)

Call for Submissions for the Scholarly Program of

The 73rd Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management

    August 9-13, 2013

    Orlando, Florida

The SIM Division is a research community actively examining corporate responsibility, governance, ethics, business-government relations and social issues relating to business including social development, corruption, peace, diversity, and hunger alleviation among others. Managing corporations' impacts on all of their stakeholders (and vice versa) entails the recognition that businesses are embedded within broader social, governmental, and civil society systems.

SIM members engage in theory-building and theory-testing to understand impacts, interactions, institutional settings, and issues shaping managerial decision-making. The common logic of scholarship in the SIM Division is our shared interest in understanding responsible behavior at the individual, organizational, and collective (e.g., public-private, multi-lateral) levels. We are keen to understand organizations' contributions (or lack thereof) to the greater good. We examine behavioral and philosophical approaches to business ethics, stakeholder theory, political strategy, community investment, compliance, and base of the pyramid (BoP) issues such as the role of the private sector in poverty alleviation, promoting peace, resilience, and building self-sufficiency. International impacts (both exogenous and endogenous) examine if, how, and under what conditions managerial, organizational, and collective responses vary based on national context, customs, traditions, and beliefs.

SIM encourages submissions linked to the 2013 conference theme, Capitalism in Question. Details about the conference theme can be found on the annual meeting website: http://annualmeeting.aomonline.org/2013/. But we welcome papers and symposia addressing any topic within the realm of our research community, as described at the top of this call. We're a big tent, full of nice people (and a few clowns) engaging in rigorous scholarly work of relevance to both business and society. Please join us in our worthwhile pursuits.

The SIM Division sponsors numerous awards, including those for best competitive paper, best student competitive paper, best paper on the history of corporate responsibility (CR), best dissertation and best book. So go on – take a crack at it!

Submission Details: The submission deadline for papers and symposia is: January 15, 2013 at 5pm EST.  Early submissions are encouraged. All submissions are to be made online: http://submissions.aomonline.org/2013/. Please contact Mike Barnett, 2013 SIM Division Program Chair (sim2013@business.rutgers.edu) by December 14, 2012, if you have any questions. The scholarly program of the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management will be held in Orlando, Florida, from Sunday, August 11th, to Tuesday, August 13th, 2013.
