Max McGraw Professorship

The University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) is seeking a candidate to fill an endowed, full time, nine-month, professor position to contribute to research and teaching at the nexus of business, markets, and sustainability.  Corporations play a major role in shaping sustainability and influencing environmental quality both internally through corporate behavior and management practices, and externally through their products, engagement with stakeholders, and influence on markets and public policies. We seek candidates that are recognized for their scholarship in sustainability, and with expertise in theories and methods related to disciplines such as business strategy and partnerships, sustainable product innovation, finance and environmental accounting, organizational management, clean tech entrepreneurship, sustainable operations and supply chain management, environmental markets and marketing, or public policy and corporate governance. We will consider applicants at the Associate Professor or Professor level.

SNRE's mission is to contribute to the protection of the Earth's resources and the achievement of a sustainable society.  The School contributes new scientific knowledge, visionary leadership, and trained professionals toward that end.  The faculty of the School is diverse, with natural scientists, social scientists, engineers, and designers working collectively in an integrative setting.  A professional school set within a major research university, SNRE provides a model of interdisciplinary and applied research and a focal point of research and teaching on sustainability.

The School offers a Ph.D. in Natural Resources and Environment, a professional MS degree in six fields of study: conservation ecology; environmental informatics; sustainable systems; environmental policy and planning; behavior, education and communication; and environmental justice, and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture (MLA).  The student body includes over 350 MS/MLA and 60 doctoral students.  SNRE also participates in multiple cross-campus degree programs, including an undergraduate Program in the Environment degree, dual degrees with the Schools of Architecture and Urban Planning, Business, Engineering, Law, and Public Health, and offers several graduate certificate programs.  Additional information about the School can be found at www.snre.umich.edu.

This endowed chair is made possible by a generous contribution made in 1993 by the McGraw Foundation.  The McGraw Professor will continue the tradition of pursuing an active, pathbreaking program of research on corporate behavior and sustainability. It is our expectation that the McGraw Professor will maintain a high profile in both scientific academies and business associations around the world.  The selected candidate will also support the teaching, research, and administration of the Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise, a joint venture of the School of Natural Resources & Environment and the Ross School of Business.  The successful candidate will also hold a courtesy appointment in the Ross School of Business.

Responsibilities

Scholarship: The successful candidate is expected to establish a strong program of scholarship that contributes to expanding knowledge in the faculty member's discipline and to the interdisciplinary problem-focused mission of the School.

Teaching:  Support SNRE's teaching mission at both graduate and undergraduate levels (three courses per year, balancing core or required courses with courses of the faculty's choice, as determined in consultation with the Associate Dean of Academic Programs);

Guiding and mentoring graduate students:  The new faculty member will participate in the academic counseling of graduate students and supervise doctoral and master's students including those involved in integrative, group-based master's projects.

Service and collaboration:  The new faculty member will contribute to the stewardship of SNRE, the Erb Institute, the University and relevant professions.

Qualifications

Applicants should have completed a Ph.D. in management, political science, economics, public policy, decision-sciences, or related fields.  A strong record of independent peer-reviewed scholarship and teaching experience is required. Prior teaching experience at a professional master's degree level is strongly desired.  A track record of leadership in promoting cross-sector dialogue and collaborative research on corporate behavior and sustainability is also desired.
