State of the SIMians

    Dear Fellow SIMians,

I hope you're all recovering well from the prior week in Philadelphia. It was a great time – thanks again to Harry Van Buren and Jamie Hendry for a terrific and well-catered PDW and program! And thanks to Jenn Griffin for all her great work as Division Chair – shoes I must now attempt to fill (thankfully she wears flats and not high heels).

In the SIM Division Plenary, we had a lengthy discussion about how we might continue to improve the SIM Division. Much of it revolved around the basic notion that we're a welcoming community, whose work extends beyond just one week in early August, and so we need to find additional ways to keep members engaged throughout the year. So how to do this?

For one, sign up to the SIM listserv.  OK, OK, so you've already done that, else I wouldn't be talking to you right now. I get it. But there are many SIMians who are not on the SIM listserv – at least 500. As Division Chair, I get access to all SIM member email addresses, but not until Sept. 1st for some reason – so if you know of any SIMians who aren't signed up to the list, and you can beat me to the punch by a few weeks, please have them sign up. They can do so here: http://aomlists.pace.edu/scripts/wa.exe?SUBED1=SIM&A=1

Another way is to visit the SIM website frequently. It's here: http://sim.aomonline.org/. Aimee has done a great job of revamping the SIM website. The key now is to keep the content up to date. So please do contact her at aomsimwebmaster@gmail.com if you have content to add. And I'll be trying to sort out ways to develop more interactive content therein soon. And I'll be pestering many more of you to lead discussions and content development on various specialty topics.

Yet another way is to follow the SIM Division Twitter feed: @aom_sim.  Go on – do it already! I'll post tidbits on a regular basis. Let me know if you have anything you'd like to share; and you can also directly send to the twitter feed.

Also try this: if you have any suggestions on ways to improve the division, do contact any member of the leadership team. The almost-current list is here: http://my.aom.org/Leadership/toc.aspx?action=DIG&code=SIM

Finally, please note that you'll have an opportunity to provide formal feedback soon. We're about to prepare our 5-year report to AOM. In it, we basically assess the health of the division. And a key part of this is a survey of all members. It's essential that we obtain a good response rate. You'll receive a notice that the survey will open on October 15th. Please complete the survey shortly thereafter . . . please, please, pretty please, with sugar on top!  We need your input.

Thanks again for being a part of SIM. We value your engagement, and we hope you find it worthwhile, too.

    Best,

    Mike
