In a world where governments are retreating and corporations are sometimes portrayed as operating in an institutional void, understanding why and how corporations tackle public problems in countries where they are conducting business is highly relevant. We offer a challenging research incubator on political corporate social responsibility to encourage debate on studying key issues involving political CSR.
We have invited some leading scholars in the domain of political CSR to ask questions intended to push the theoretical and empirical boundaries of this research area. These scholars will offer a brief research appetizers; the subsequent small group incubators will provide ample opportunity for further elaboration and in-depth discussion. Participants can discuss their views and research ideas within the incubators, receive feedback and exchange ideas. Two experts, Jeremy Moon (Copenhagen Business School) and Dirk Matten (York University), have offered to identify common themes and challenges across the three incubators.
The incubators are focused on three important themes:
1. Governance: Hard Times for Soft Law & What About the Nation State?
• Andreas Rasche (Copenhagen Business School)
• Dorothea Baur (University St. Gallen)
2. Relationships: How Does The Local Context Impact the Practice of CSR?
• Michelle Westermann - Behaylo (University of Amsterdam)
• Kathleen Rehbein (Marquette University)
• Christopher Wickert (VU University Amsterdam)
3. Using CSR Politically: Attempts, Activists’ Role and Social Media
• Douglas Schuler (Rice University)
• Itziar Castello (University Carlos III, Madrid)
• Frank de Bakker (VU University Amsterdam)
Through this research incubator, we aim to develop, a.o.
• More knowledge about empirical inroads with respect to political CSR, and persisting empirical questions;
• A greater understanding of some of the theoretical premises used to understand why and when corporations are willing to provide public goods, to increase societal welfare in the global economy and in how lobbying and activism can play a role therein;
• Insights in the role of governance, standards and activism in political CSR;
• Discussing potential pitfalls, with respect to the efficiency and legitimacy of political CSR;
• An agenda for potentially interesting research projects in this area;
• An engaging debate!
No pre-registration required – questions welcomed,
We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia!
