Entrepreneurs and the Creation of Sustainable Economies: The Example of Judy Wicks - PDW Session 71, Friday, Aug 1 2014 10:00AM - 12:00PM at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, Washington Room B
While attention to sustainability has focused on creating more ecologically sustainable organizations, sustainability ultimately requires the creation of sustainable economies.
Many of the encouraging innovations that may lead to the development of sustainable economies are being led at the local level, in part by local government officials, but also by business people, especially small business owners and entrepreneurs.
This PDW will take an in-depth look at the work of one such entrepreneur, Judy Wicks, the former owner of the White Dog Café in Philadelphia and winner of a Business Enterprise Trust Award for socially responsible business practice. Beginning with efforts to increase the sustainability of her restaurant’s food and energy use, Ms. Wicks embarked upon a series of efforts that accomplished her immediate goals and resulted in the creation of numerous local, regional, and national networks to promote more sustainable business practices and the creation of sustainable local and regional economies.
Following presentations by Judy Wicks and a staff member from one of these networks, SBN Philadelphia, participants will break into roundtable discussions of what implications her efforts have for scholarly research, teachers of business courses, and practice by entrepreneurs interested in extending their sustainability efforts beyond the boundaries of their organizations.

For those unable to attend, we encourage you to read about her efforts in her new book, Good Morning, Beautiful Business: The Unexpected Journey of an Activist Entrepreneur and Local Economy Pioneer (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2013).
This session should be of interest to members of SIM because it will provide an in-depth examination of the innovative social and environmental practices of a small business owner, and how these expanded to have a broader social impact. Many members of SIM used the case and/or video about Judy Wicks produced by the Business Enterprise Trust in 1995 in their courses, and for these members this session will provide an opportunity to update their knowledge of her subsequent activities and incorporate them in their teaching. SIM members who are scholars of social networks should also find the information about Wicks’ involvement in the creation of responsible business support structures and networks to be interesting. Those interested in doing possible research in these areas may find opportunities to establish relationships with like-minded colleagues whom they have not interacted with before, including those from other divisions that may be attracted to the session.
