DIVERSITY & INCLUSION THEME COMMITTEE (D&ITC)

PDW Chair: David A. Kravitz, George Mason University, dakditc@gmu.edu

2017 D&ITC Professional Development Workshops: Call for Proposals

The mission of the Diversity and Inclusion Theme Committee (D&ITC) is to provide learning and outreach opportunities that foster a more diverse and inclusive AOM community. We define diversity to include all of the multiple lines of difference that characterize our current and future membership. Inclusion means that all members have the opportunity to be represented, to have their voices heard and valued, and to have influence on the AOM. More information about the D&ITC can be found here

The conference theme for 2017 is At the Interface, with interface defined as "a common boundary or interconnection between systems, concepts or human beings." This theme invites us to think about the boundaries that may separate diverse members of the Academy and how inclusion can create interconnections between people.

Submitters should consider, but are not bound by, the conference theme. Of even greater importance, proposed PDWs must contribute to the mission of the D&ITC. We specifically welcome proposals for sessions that are designed, through interactive workshops and other suitable activities, to contribute to the development of a more inclusive AOM. Ideas for D&ITC PDWs include sessions that:

    ·         Potentially help Academy leaders serve the diversity of member needs and backgrounds, and foster more inclusion across multiple lines of diversity.

    ·         Enhance member knowledge and skills pertaining to diversity and inclusion, in their multi-faceted forms and manifestations, to inspire behavior that enhances all members' actual and felt inclusion at the AOM meetings and related activities.

Submitter should keep in mind the distinction between the GDO Division and the D&ITC. Our mission is inward-looking – to foster a more diverse and inclusive AOM community.

PDWs can be designed in a variety of ways – creativity in form and process is encouraged. Good PDWs will be interactive, inclusive and integrative – facilitating the active involvement of all participants. They will also be developmental and perhaps challenging – helping participants grow in ways that are not possible in traditional paper sessions.

The online submission system specifies a minimum duration of 2 hours. If you believe a duration of 1.5 hours would better serve the workshop, session flow, and attendee engagement, please document that request in the uploaded proposal document. If the proposal is accepted, the PDW Chair will reduce the duration to 1.5 hours on the submitter's behalf.

All proposals should be submitted using the AOM submission system before or by the deadline of Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 5pm ET (NY Time). In their proposals, submitters should address how they will disseminate information about their session, encourage attendance and engagement, and identify opportunities for co-sponsorship with other divisions, interest groups or theme committees. If you have questions or would like to discuss an idea for a PDW, please contact David A. Kravitz by email or at (703) 993-1781.
