I recently had Aaron Beam speak to undergraduate and MBA students.
Beam was a co-founder and the first CFO at HealthSouth.
He has written a book and has quite a story to tell about Richard Scrushy and his own involvement in accounting fraud. He left the company a year after the fraud began, but was then followed by a number of other CFOs who continued it. Interestingly, Sarbanes-Oxley played a role in bringing the fraud to light.
Beam has now served several months in jail and has paid restitution. He currently has a lawn mowing business (one man, one lawn mower) in Florida. Scrushy and a number of the CFOs remain in prison (you may remember that Scrushy famously got off for the accounting fraud but was convicted of bribery charges).
I know that paying a former felon to speak to students is controversial.
But, my students learned a lot from the talk. So, I thought I'd pass along his contact information.
