I've always wondered whether TurnItIn was turning it around - "checking" papers for plagiarism and then selling those same papers elsewhere. No one could ever illuminate this for me! Thanks for this heads-up, Rich.

There's a lot to think about here.

One thing worth discussing in this connection is the idea that "it's just business." After all, it seems likely that this would be part of what these "entrepreneurs" would say in response to questions about the propriety of what they are doing.

Suppose that it were to emerge that a Ph.D. in, say, entrepreneurial leadership, were awarded to a student who had purchased a plagiarism-free dissertation from this outfit. What's an appropriate response in such a scenario? I think a response would need to address not only the student but the company that provided the plagiarism-free dissertation. It's easy to imagine an undergraduate asking "Is there something wrong with their business model?" The folks at this outfit might ask the same basic question. How should we answer it?

One final note: companies such as Turnitin do NOT provide plagiarism detection software. What they provide is a text matching service.
