Thinking Big to Improve Lives: How SIM Pioneers Influenced their Students to Improve Others' Lives

Saturday, August 11, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM., Marriott, Lakeview Room, Session #358

    Panelists:

Stefanie Lenway, University of St. Thomas, Mentored by Edwin Epstein

Sandra Waddock, Boston College, Mentored by James Post

James Weber, Duquesne University, Mentored by William C. Frederick

Denis Collins [session chair], Edgewood College,  Mentored by William C. Frederick

Abstract: This Social Issues in Management (SIM) professional development workshop examines how some of the SIM scholars from the 1960s and 1970s shaped our field by influencing their doctoral students to "Think Big" about "Improving Lives," the AOM 2018 program theme. Examining the importance of mentors and mentoring, the PDW will examine how workshop panelists and attendees carried on this special SIM mission during their careers, and how such mentorship today can influence future generations to tackle the world's (increasingly) "grand challenges" to "improve lives."

The five panelists have attempted to carry forward their mentor's torch in unique ways while establishing their own careers and areas of expertise. They will discuss how these mentors and SIM pioneers influenced their scholarship, teaching, and efforts to impact other scholars, their own institutions, students, and the business community, and share their challenges over their thirty year careers.

Workshop attendees will be encouraged to share their own experiences being mentored or mentoring, and how their future scholarship, teaching and other efforts will hopefully impact the lives of others.

    Xxx

    Hope to see you there,

    Denis Collins
