Dear SIM Members and Friends,
We share here the heartfelt letter from Johanne Ward-Grosvold on behalf of IABS regarding the passing of our fellow SIMian and dear colleague, Judith Schrempf-Stirling.
Judith was an equally committed and important member of SIM. Our Division shares in the mourning of Judith's passing and honors her numerous contributions -- scholarship, service, friendship, and inspiration -- among our community and in our field.
From Johanne Ward-Grosvold, International Association For Business & Society (IABS) Immediate Past President:
" It is with enormous sadness that I must announce the death of Professor Judith Schrempf-Stirling. She died following a prolonged battle with cancer, a battle she was very open about.
Judith was first and foremost a much loved and devoted mother, wife, daughter, sibling and friend. She was also to the IABS community a much loved, liked and respected friend, a colleague and a towering intellect. Many of you will be familiar with her research but we will also remember her generosity and kindness and devotion of time and effort to junior colleagues, PhD students, to the IABS community and to her own students. And of course, the joy she brought to many a conference dinner, coffee catch-up and research chat.
Since her cancer diagnosis Judith spoke passionately about the need for openness around the disease. She was clear that it had taken her doctors too long to diagnose her, and she encouraged people to trust their instincts and never give up in getting the medical attention they need. She had hoped to beat the disease and had decided to have a tattoo of the three values she lived by done once she had healed. However, as she realised that healing would not come, she went ahead with the tattoo. We have her permission to share a picture of it, and so in a fitting tribute to an extraordinary woman in her own words; "Strength, resilience and courage" "
Should you wish to share thoughts with Judith's family, please email me (erica_steckler@uml.edu) with the subject line: 'Professor Judith Schrempf-Stirling'. SIM will forward your messages along.
We will share information about any commemorative events or initiatives that the SIM community is invited to join as we learn of these.
